Missing Glances
Most of us are content
glancing—
a mother holds her young daughter’s hand,
crossing the street.
Our mind registers—
oh, a mom walks her young daughter
across the street.
We glance, but we do not see—
how proud the little girl is
skipping in her new cherry-red shoes,
with the black buckle;
her mom, someplace else,
oblivious to her daughter’s song.
We talk of visiting
the ruins in the Yucatan
or Aurora Borealis’
electric skies.
But why talk of going far—
when we hardly see
what’s across the street?
